Theme: Age/ Decay
This week we look at the theme of ageing or decay.
When something is old or decayed, it is usually damaged, showing signs of wear and not able to hold it's shape and colour as it once did.
Signs of degradation and decay usually require a long time to become evident and this inherently suggests the notion of time passing. Something that existed a long time ago in a world that no longer exists.
'Memory' is another theme that naturally works well with images of decay. Since the object has taken a long time to degrade, it has 'witnessed' events and people that perhaps do not exist anymore.
Every mark of age or damage tells a story of the life this object once had. How it functioned proudly and even assisted the people that once used it.
Decay is a great theme to get you exploring the ugly, messy and usually discarded side of life. Some tips to help you on your way with this theme;
- Look for variations in colour and texture.
- Be careful and avoid abandoned buildings etc unless you are sure they are safe.
- Think about the stories the object could tell and try to compose the frame with this in mind.
